Plant Extracts Research Unit

Bioactive molecules

Our organic chemists and biochemists have expertise in the isolation and identification of bioactive natural products, chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses, chemical synthesis and biosynthesis.

We collaborate with biologists, throughout New Zealand and around the world, with expertise in biological testing and screening.  Bioactive compounds are purified by chromatography, and their structures established by NMR spectroscopy. Synthetic analogs and derivatives are prepared for structure/activity studies.

Medicinal herbs

We analyse levels of active molecules in medicinal herbs by high performance liquid chromatography and in essential oils by gas chromatography. These analyses are available as a service to industry, in collaboration with our experts in crop establishment and agronomy.

The Plant Extracts Research Unit is located in the University of Otago's Chemistry Department.  This gives us access to the facilities and staff of the University, and allows students and visiting academics to work with Unit staff.
