Crop & Food Research and HortResearch, two of New Zealand's leading government-owned research institutes, merged on December 1, 2008 to create Plant & Food Research.

The merger combined the two companies' knowledge and expertise in a wealth of areas including sustainable production, elite genetics, and smart breeding, and food and health, which will benefit national initiatives and strategies.
