plant breeding, winter nurseries and seed production

Plant breeding
Our plant breeding services are delivered through the CropSeed business unit, which links plant breeders and industry – from germplasm to commercial seed production.

Our major breeding programmes focus on:

  • Arable: wheat, barley, oats, forage brassicas and forage cereals
  • Vegetable: potato, sweet potato and vining peas

New cultivars are marketed through licensees or joint breeding partners.

Winter nurseries
We are the foremost New Zealand winter nursery provider. We have been involved in partnerships with major Northern Hemisphere plant breeders since 1972. Our services range from single seed planting to large scale seed multiplications.

Doubled haploid barley and wheat production
Double haploids enable breeders to achieve homozygosity from early generation breeding material of self-pollinating crops. There are several steps in doubled haploid production and we have developed suitable techniques over many years. We now provide this as a commercial service to plant breeders internationally.

If you are interested in sending seed, please contact Richard Pickering.

Partnerships in breeding programmes
We share the benefits of breeding programmes with our partners, including leading food and seed companies. Partners in specific programmes share in project planning and monitoring, and ownership of the intellectual property.

Seed cleaning services
At Crop & Food Research we can clean your seed from all types of contaminants, whether it be crop litter, insect debris, soil, or as is most common, from other seed contaminants.
